The Advanced Diploma in Legal Studies is a one-year Diploma programme designed for those wishing to obtain foundation knowledge of the core principles of Irish Law. 

Aims
The Advanced Diploma in Legal Studies programme aims to provide learners with exposure to the core areas of law in order to work as a legal practitioner, with legal knowledge in a commercial environment, or to undertake further advanced legal studies. Learners will gain knowledge of the scope, content, and operation of the core areas of Irish law and of the legal institutions that enforce it. This programme provides learners with an appropriate base of relevant study in which to analyse legal problems, receive sound knowledge on theoretical legal frameworks and a comprehensive perspective of the legal system. They gain an appreciation of how the different sources of law interrelate and an appreciation of how the European legal system operates.

Objectives 

The programme objectives are to allow learners to:

• Understand the operation of the legal system and the core concepts and principles that underpin it.

• Acquire the analytical skills necessary to apply legal rules to factual situations of limited complexity.

• Develop foundational legal knowledge and comprehension, as well as academic and practical skills to progress further in their studies.

• Develop knowledge of the concepts, processes, rules and regulations that govern the core areas of law.

Over recent years the developments in Employment Law have meant that it has become a prominent and important topic in today’s business environment. This introductory course in this highly relevant subject is aimed at providing an overview of the main elements of both Irish and European employment legislation as it relates to both employers and employees.

The aim of the course is to provide the student with an overview of the laws and regulations that affect the functioning of the employment relationship.

The programme examines the duties of both employees and employers and attempts to provide students with a broad understanding of employment law issues through the analysis of existing legislation and case law.

On successful completion of this programme all participants will have studies the main sources of employment law including the concept of "employee", the design of an employment contract, equality  issues including harassment in the workplace, holidays and leave entitlements, termination of contracts and redundancy issues, health and safety concerns and the effects of collective bargaining.
