Dublin Business School prides itself on promoting a work-life balance and providing tailored support services to help our part time students obtain their qualification. At our 2012 conferring ceremony held in the RDS this week, some of our students gave an insight into evening study at DBS.
'Despite my qualifications as a music teacher, I always held a deep interest in studying Journalism and Media Studies. The evening diploma course with DBS offered me a study programme that was stimulating and, most importantly, that fitted easily into my weekly teaching schedule. It offered a chance for me to meet new people in a friendly and engaging environment as well as gain a qualification in an interesting subject.
The Journalism and Media Studies Diploma course was a fantastic experience for me both personally and professionally. Not only did I engage with like-minded individuals who all had a passion for the world of journalism and media but it allowed me the opportunity to gain work-experience in one of the country’s fastest growing regional radio stations. The course also helped to shape my attitude and approach to journalism and radio by broadening my knowledge in order to seek work within the sector.
At present I am still teaching music but I hope to gain more work in the field of radio. At some point in the future I would like to continue my studies by completing a Masters in Broadcasting or Radio. The course with DBS has given me the sufficient tools and a solid basis for pursuing a career in free-lance journalism or radio. The lecturers were incredibly helpful and interesting professionals who made the course all the more enjoyable every week.
Not only was the course a success for me academically but I would highly recommend it socially as it is easily accessible and fits nicely into one’s working week due to the fact that it is taught over two evenings a week.'

'I work in Internet Marketing. Over the past 24 months as search marketing and Google in particular has been evolving, I’ve seen my job being influenced heavily by traditional roles such as Sales, Marketing, PR & Advertising. I felt if I could train myself in the traditional offline techniques such Sales, Marketing and PR, etc., I could apply these techniques online and improve my overall skill set and Return On Investment for my employer in our online marketing efforts. The reason I chose my course with DBS was that it was the course that fit most with my needs since it covered all four modules, was conveniently located around the top of Grafton St (close to train/bus & luas) , reasonably priced and run over a short time period.
The course has been of great benefit to me both professionally and personally. I’ve found myself to be a lot more organised and focused since completing the course. I’ve used what I’ve learned in the PR module to increase our online press releases and distribution. The sales techniques I’ve used to improve the conversion rates of our online sales pages and I’ve used the marketing & advertising to grow the internet traffic of our websites.
Since doing this course, my employer has given me more responsibility and allowed me to grow my role further into the areas covered by my course. I enjoyed everything about the course and found the split between assignments and tests very easy to handle and more convenient for someone doing a course at night. The best thing about studying in DBS is the people, mainly the lecturers and classmates. The lecturers were very enthusiastic about their areas of expertise and I found their enthusiasm to be infectious. They also applied real world knowledge to their academic experience when teaching.'
