BA in Film & Media
With the various forms of media culture that now exist, from cinema, television, radio, print media, advertising to the proliferation of new media practices on the internet, it can be difficult to really understand the way contemporary electronic audio-visual media represents society and shape our understanding of the world around us.

The BA in Film & Media offers learners the opportunity to develop a broad understanding of the various forms of media culture that now exist. consider the ways in which mass media represent social and individual identity, the issues relating to ethnicity, race, gender, and the globalisation of culture. This programme offers students a chance to learn the basic skills involved in digital film productions and will carry out their own media projects, providing them with a range of transferable skills and disciplines that make them attractive to employers.


The BA in Film & Media is a full-time three year course that consists of a range of interrelated modules designed to address the historical, theoretical and practical aspects of media culture. Learners are exposed to a range of research methods that include textual analysis, the study of audio-visual media in the context of their historical evolution, the investigation of the operation of contemporary mass media, both globally and in Ireland, and the practical aspects of media production.

The degree is divided into three levels and students take the programme in its entirety. In Level 1, students undertake introductory subjects that are designed to develop knowledge and understanding of core disciplines to provide a platform for more advanced study. Students study a wide rage of subjects including the History of Cinema, Radio Production and Understanding Media and Societs. In Level 2, students take subjects that build on the level 1 foundation and further develop student knowledge and understanding. Subjects like Writing, Editing and Designing for Print Media allow students to develop their creative skills, while Politics of Media Representation allowes students develop their analytical and critical skills. Finally, in Level 3, students take subjects intended to develop understanding of applied areas and key subjects, such as The Documentary Form and Contemporart Media Analysis. Furthermore, students also undertake a research project under the guidance of a supervisor.

Graduates from this programme will not only have the chance to persue successful careers in industries such as Media and Film but will also be well-placed to continue their academic progression on the HETAC Framework. Graduates of this programme may also progress to the final year of three Level 8 programmes offered by DBS; the BA in (Hons) Film Studies or the BA in (Hons) Arts, specialising in both the Film Studies and the Media and Cultural Studies streams.

To apply for this programme through the CAO, fill in the course code DB576 into the Level 6/7 box. Mature applicants, anyone over the age of 23 as of the 1st January this year, can apply through the website

DBS Students present at the 35th Annual Congress of Psychology Students in Ireland
This year’s Annual Student Congress for Psychology was hosted by IADT from the 12th-13th April. 27 of our students presented oral and poster presentations based on the findings of their undergraduate or postgraduate research thesis, with all 27 DBS students' abstracts published in a supplement of the Irish Psychologist. A list of our students and their presentations, and pictures from the event, is available on our website and our Facebook page.
