DBS is delighted to announce that we are offering a number of fully funded programme places through the Springboard+ 2017 initiative this Autumn, which includes a new Certificate in Cloud Platform Development*. This programme is a Level 7 Special Purpose Award on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ), and is fully accredited by Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI).

As places are limited, early application is advised to avoid disappointment.

Why Study Cloud Platform Development?

This is an innovative programme with an integrated delivery from end‐to‐end covering a range of cloud platform development skills applicable to the ICT and other sectors. The programme aims to develop learners' knowledge of the theory and practice of web development, databases and cloud application design, development and deployment through Platform-as-a Service (PaaS) providers necessary for graduates to secure employment and perform in the area of cloud platform development in a broad range of commercial, industrial and public sector environments.

This programme is aimed learners interested in being fast tracked to designing and developing applications that run on cloud based platforms (e.g. Google App Engine, Microsoft Azure).

  • Learners will be guided through the basics of designing and coding interactive web applications that run on various devices (mobile, tablet, laptop).
  • Learners will gain hands on experience in integrating frontend web development with backend web technologies and databases.
  • No prior knowledge of programming or web development is necessary but any technical know-how would be beneficial.

A selection of languages will be covered (depending on demand) from the following list: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, Python, Ruby and C#.

Corresponding technologies that can be employed to deploy these web applications to the cloud include: Google Cloud Platform, Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, Open Shift and Heroku.

This programme is aimed at those with any Level 6 NFQ award in any discipline or equivalent.

Applicants for this programme are required to have a good level of digital literacy.
At a minimum they should:
1. Have a good working knowledge of computers, Windows OS and file managers. 2. Be comfortable using the Internet and Internet browsers on a range of devices. 3. Be familiar working with online applications such as Office 365 and Google Docs (including online storage e.g. Dropbox).

The evaluation of experiential learning will be determined on a case by case basis. RPL candidates will be required to complete the application form and provide detailed written evidence regarding prior experiental learning against entry criteria. In such instances a subject matter expert from the Programme Team will assess the application and ensure cognate mapping to the programme.
