New Programme - MSc in Information & Library Management
For those wishing to pursue a career in Information & Library Management on a professional level.

The MSc in Information and Library Management provides learners with the applied professional knowledge and competencies required of a manager within the information and library sector. The programme also enables existing library personnel to obtain a professional library qualification for promotional purposes.

Why an MSc?

Feedback from prospective employers and prospective students indicated a strong appetite in the marketplace for an MSc qualification. In terms of module content, delivery and assessment, the MSc at DBS is both technical and applied in nature with a strong focus on producing ready-to-work graduates. All programme modules are compulsory to ensure that graduates have the requisite skills for a variety of roles in information and library management.  After the completion of the taught modules, students undertake an individual dissertation.

Why an MSc in Information and Library Management

As the programme is LAI accredited, graduates can work as professional-grade library managers. To enhance employability, the programme also ensures that graduates are equipped to work in a variety of wider information management roles. DBS recently carried out a survey with wider IT and business employers, 92 percent of which expressed an interest in recruiting an information and library management graduate.  The college is continuing to work with a wide variety of non-traditional library employers to highlight the value of having an information and library manager in their organisation so as to expand the range of opportunities on offer for graduates of this discipline.

Employability

The programme has a strong emphasis on establishing and building a career in the sector and beyond.  To this effect, the course includes a Personal and Professional Development (PPD) module designed to enhance the employability of graduates.  The module includes a built-in three-week work placement and incorporates a number of industry guest speakers from the information and library management sector  Graduates of the MSc in Information and Library Management at DBS have gone on to secure positions in a wide range of libraries and information services.

The DBS Library Service has been closely engaged with the MSc programme throughout its delivery.  Library staff provide support and inspiration to students of the programme by permitting real world Library projects to be used for student projects and dissertations.

Some of you may have attended DBS Library’s inaugural seminar in June 2014. The seminar gave a flavour of projects that we are working on.
