Dublin Welcomes Giro d'Italia
Thousands Greet World's Elite Cyclists in the Capital
The people of Dublin welcomed the arrival of one of the premier international cycling events this weekend with the completion of Stage 3 of the annual Giro d'Italia. Huge crowds descended upon Dublin's city centre on Sunday to greet and support the world's elite cyclists as they raced to cross the finish line in Dublin's Merrion Square. The tour, known as the most high profile event on the cycling calendar after the Tour de France, began its Irish stint on Friday in Belfast, remaining in Northern Ireland until Sunday morning, when the pack of 200 travelled 187km southwards towards to the Irish finish file.
The people of Dublin celebrated in the carnival atmosphere on a warm and sunny afternoon enjoying events in the specially created 'Giro Park' which included an Irish Cycling Show. The tour has now returned to its traditional home in Italy and is due to finish in Trieste on June 1st.
