Growth in the Marketing field expected in 2014
Marketing jobs and budgets are expected to increase over the next two years

According to the latest industry sector research, "Irish marketers are approaching 2014 with confidence and positivity with the vast majority of senior marketers expecting to grow their staff numbers and their budgets in the year ahead."

Gráinne O’Brien, director, MCsquared has said “The 2014 marketing outlook is more positive than at any time over the past six years. Marketing jobs and budgets are expected to increase over the next two years with digital and content marketing set to benefit most from any uplift.”

The research was commissioned by MCsquared (the consumer and brands division of Murray Consultants) and carried out by Amárach Research, in association with the Marketing Institute of Ireland (MII).

Conducted among MII members, findings indicate that "investment in brand communications through digital channels continues to grow strongly." Almost 60pc of those surveyed plan to increase the budget allocated to digital marketing in 2014.

Digital currently accounts for almost one quarter (24%) of marketing spend. While there's a certain renewed optimism in the industry, many of those surveyed continue to grapple with getting fully up to speed with the plethora of social media channels now available.

O'Brien continued “Notwithstanding some loosening of marketing purse strings, we are seeing a pretty dramatic evolution of marketing disciplines and skills that presents challenges and opportunities in equal measure. Many marketers are still struggling with the balance between in-house or partnering with the right agencies".

Chief Executive of MMI, Tom Trainor noted: “There is no doubt that many Irish marketing departments and agencies have had a torrid time over the past five years but this research and feedback from the wider industry suggests that there is greater confidence amongst business leaders which should translate into real growth in 2014.”

“We are very encouraged by the positive soundings coming from the marketing profession and based on these findings and discussions with our own clients there is early evidence that the Irish consumer is starting to spend again. Businesses and brands who are equipped to re-engage with consumers in a compelling way will win out,” added O’Brien.

Returning to college can be daunting, so we have listed a few of the most common concerns we hear from applicants, to assure you that DBS has considered all areas to ensure that we have provided the necessary support to make the return to education as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

Will I cope with the study?

Feelings of worry and a lack of confidence are not uncommon. Many applicants worry that they will struggle with coursework or appear weak in comparison to other students;  In reality, mature students tend to settle into their courses well and are very successful in their studies – often out-performing their younger counterparts, as dedication and effort is 90% of the battle in terms of coursework.

If it has been some time since you have written an assignment or produced a bibliography; Our lecturers are a great source of support. In addition, our library staff offer free academic support classes in the evenings, and will take students through the main points of researching, referencing and essay writing.

Do I have to purchase  books?

DBS course fees include notes and access to our online student learning system Moodle, so we do not request that students purchase books for their studies. Core texts for each programme are available in multiple in our library, and many are additionally in electronic form. Students may wish to purchase books they feel are very useful, however it is not a requirement.
