Dublin-based billing software firm Brite:Bill is to create 100 new jobs on foot of winning a major new contract in North America. The company said it is looking to hire a mix of specialised talent across all areas of its business with an immediate requirement for software developers, system architects and project managers. The new recruits will be hired over the next two years with half coming on board this year. Some 75 will be based in its new Dublin headquarters with the remainder in its North American offices. Founded in Dublin in 2010, Brite:Bill creates software for clients which allows them to provide customised billing, invoices and statements to customers. Chief executive Alan Coleman said: “These are important new roles and the people who come on board in these jobs will be key in supporting our rapid growth and will help us build and scale the company”. Minister for Jobs Richard Bruton said: “At the heart of our jobs plan is developing a powerful engine of Irish enterprise, and Brite:Bill is a great example of the type of company we are trying to support through our growing programme of overseas activities.” Source: IrishTimes.com

Course Focus: BSc (Hons) Computing

The BSc (Hons) in Computing has been prepared in line with current developments within the ICT sector and is informed by consultation with employers. The programme incorporates a mandatory 10 month paid work placement, which is included to ensure graduates of the programme will have the required practical application of the programme content to ensure a smooth transition into the workplace and further progression within the workplace.
The BSc (Hons) Computing is offered in four different streams: - Cloud Computing
- Data Analytics and Big Data
- Software Development
- Web and Cloud Technologies
The BSc (Hons) in Computing responds to a known and often articulated skills shortage that exists in the ICT sector. The Irish Government and Industry recognise that there is an urgent requirement to ensure an adequate supply of ICT talent and skills from both the domestic and international markets to meet needs. Aims & Objectives of the course: On completion of this programme, students should be able to:
• Work effectively in ICT environments within organisations
• Understand the theoretical and practical applications in the major areas of Computing
• Enable the student to contextualise his/her studies by affording the opportunity of a work placement in an ICT role
• Demonstrate presentation and reporting skills in addition to personal and career development, facilitating preparation for work and postgraduate study
• Demonstrate experience in the research, formulation, implementation and evaluation of a problem and its solution
• Display competence in dealing knowledgeably with general computing issues and develop effective solutions
• Demonstrate a high level of competence in using a wide range of IT hardware and software tools to an industry level standard
• Display and use transferable, real world skills in a variety of business contexts
• Develop and evaluate the effectiveness of computer applications as solutions to business problems
• Proceed to postgraduate study with specialist skills based on their programme of study

IT Skills - An essential asset for all graduates

Technology and computer skills are essential assets for all workers. Even if the career you choose does not focus solely on computers, the job you do will most likely require the use of computers and technology to accomplish tasks and process information.
There are now over 5,000 technology companies located in Ireland, ranging from start-ups and SMEs, to large international and multinational companies, with an ever-growing number of Irish owned multinationals.
According to The Expert Group on Future Skills Needs, Ireland is facing an average 5% a year increase in demand for ICT skills up to the year 2018. This means that the number of ICT professionals will rise to over 91,000 in Ireland alone. Across Europe (the EU 27), the conservative projected shortage for ICT professionals by 2015 is 372,000, and potentially as high as 864,000.
This wave of ICT innovation is driving demand for new ICT skills and abilities. The ICT sector needs people who can design, develop and deploy new applications and services. It also needs people with new combinations of skills, for example, Big Data requires a combination of skills, such as technology, statistics and business skills; Social Media needs a combination of technology and marketing skills.
